Press release notes:
This much anticipated self-titled album has been under construction since 2007. Despite (or perhaps because of) all the trouble with computers and quality standards that the band set for the material, Tv-resistori has manged to encourage its horse to a gallop unforeseen. The album fuses a broad array of influences into one seamless entity, appealing to afficianados of American roots music and modern indie kids digging Jenny Wilson or Belle & Sebastian. The beautiful vocal harmonies of Päivi and Ykä (the singer-songwriter of the group) flourish, while the cheap bubblegum keyboards have been mostly exchanged for warm, acoustic sounds from upright piano, to banjos or drums made out of suitcases. Although these mature, timeless songs lean towards Finnish schlager, Motown or even country music, it doesn’t mean things have gotten boring or lean towards the middle of the road - theyre just more confident. Tv-resistori can still shake, rattle and roll like young stallions let out to the fields for the first time after the winter. Nevertheless, to balance the upbeat dance numbers like Funtsi, Ilta aikaa or Minne ratsuni laukkaa, their tape has also captured one the most touching bluegrass ballads of this century, E.S.O.P.M.J.M.V.M.P.S.O. (Pallo). Don’t let the song title fool you. In their enthusiasm for roots music, Tv-resistori even decided to record a Finnish cover version of Canned Heat’s Goin Up The Country to be included on the new album. Unfortunately, the publishing rights to the song were not granted, so we must wait until the copyright expires. Hence the agreed release date for the cover is 3rd September 2040.

Awesome ambient/drone from Finland. Produced by Sami Sänpäkkilä who’s running the one and only Fonal Records. Check out the album. Music video is also produced by the same guy. Track is called “Sateenkaarisuudelma III”.
You can hear this track on my dj-set from Tallinn couple years back, performed as DJ Ufo-Matti. It was recorded with a mic hanging from the roof. After all the performers and my friend “hei”, who all played ambientish/experimental music, I threw down some more danceable tracks from bands like Aavikko or The Tuss. People started to dance like maniacs and the microphone got a hit from someones hand and dropped down to the basement’s floor! When I was checking the recorded stuff back home, I could hear a really loud “booom” at the last minutes. Luckily the mic is still fully functional!

Islaja has left the forests and moss-covered paths behind. Through an underground tunnel, she wandered off towards the city and found you again. She came in through the door as you were taking out the rubbish. Or through the window you opened on a summer’s night. Do you feel as though you’re not alone, even if there’s no one else in the house? Look around you and you’ll see – Islaja, petrified into a ceramic head on your window sill, on your television set.

Islaja is the recording alias of Merja Kokkonen, a musician and visual artist from Helsinki, currently based in Berlin. Her fourth album Keraaminen Pää (“The Ceramic Head”) will be released September 14th 2010 on Fonal Records. It bears witness to a shift in perception and execution; yet the thread that weaves its way through all Islaja’s work remains resolute, visible and intact.
Sami Sänpäkkilä has directed a music video for the first single ‘Pimeyttä kohti’ released from the new album. It was shot with a crew of four people and almost zero budget. Read more about the shoot here: samisanpakkila.com/2010/09/islaja-pimeytta-kohti/
