Artist: Erkki Kurenniemi
Title: Rules (2-LP)
Release date: 6 June 2012

Press release notes:

Ektro Records proudly presents the pioneer of Finnish electronic and
experimental music - Mr. Erkki Kurenniemi. The tracks released here -
produced during 1963-1975 - include Kurenniemi’s focal works and
previously unreleased raw material composed as solo works - as well as
works in collaboration with Kari Hakala, Jukka Ruohomäki, Otto Donner
and Eino Ruutsalo.

Kurenniemi’s impulsive attitude towards his art - including electronic
music, films, media art, instrument design - is perfectly captured in
his composition rules presented as a guide line
of the release:

#1 The work has to be completed in a single day
#2 Consecutive sounds must be chosen so that they are totally
inconsistent or surprising and have no rational relationship with each
other
#3 ..?

Carefully chosen masterpieces are newly digitized from the original
master tapes with highest possible sample rate and resolution (192
kHz, 24 bit) to preserve a pristine listening experience. Kurenniemi’s
works are now heard first time as genuine as possible for no
artificial restoration applied in the remastering process.

Pieces compiled on this double LP and wrapped in the astonishing
gatefold cover (350 g) will be out only on vinyl.

Aavikon Kone ja Moottori: ‘Karavaani’ (“Caravan”, 1979)

Aavikon Kone ja Moottori (“Desert’s machine and motor”) was an experimental trio active in 1979-80, hailing from Tornio in the Northern Finland, consisting of Veli-Matti “Läjä” Äijälä (later of Terveet Kädet, an internationally-acclaimed hardcore punk act), Pekka Ruth and Seppo Oförsagd; armed with British Wasp synthesizer and creating sparse electronic sound which predated the output of Mika Vainio and Pan sonic for some fifteen years. For their own label IKBAL Aavikon Kone ja Moottori released two singles, both consisting of only one track. Re-releases can be found on Bad Vugum’s 1995 The Golden Greats of IKBAL and Passions of Läjä Äijälä retrospective in 2004.

Mika Vainio: Vandal EP (click to download)
Review from http://boomkat.com:
We’re struggling to contain our excitement over the latest in Raster Noton’s Unun series, following essential excursions from Aoki Takamasa, NHK and Grischa Lichtenberger with four tracks of absolutely immense nasty beats and techno reductions from Mika Vainio! It’s fully acknowledged that we have a man-crush on this producer, but it’s totally justified when he gives out analog brutalism of this variety. There’s a definite theme of northern-European destruction going on with this 12” with titles like ‘Vandals’ and ‘Goths’ connecting the downright rotten noise aesthetic to the notoriously fierce tribes of northern and central Europe. Three of the tracks opt for hiphop breakbeats and slower tempos similar to the NHK release, before bludgeoning the rhythms with extreme noise-force, but the standout for many will be ‘Barbarians’. To our knowledge it’s the first 4/4 techno track he’s made for nearly 10 years, taking cues from the arrangements of tuff Chicago patterns before eroding them with a caustic noise substance to sound like a nightmarish Marcel Dettmann. F*cking A+.
