Part 1 of the Silk Road Series sees dark Finnish frontman Tuomas Rantanen take the long and momentous journey from ‘Chang-An’ to ‘Dunhuang’, via the ‘Qilian Mountains’. Title: Mechanised Incantations
Cat.no.: CW082
Label: City Wall Records
Date: 25 November 2013
Mechanised Incantations is a spellbinding combination of ethereal voices and space age beats. It represents the final part of Tuomas Rantanen’s Cyberpunk Trilogy for 2013, a series in which Rantanen is exploring societal change from the perspective mechanical and biological integration.

Part 1, Biometrics is hard and strong, part 2, Robot Construction is full of suspense, while here in part 3 the focus has become the obscure chants that were alluded to in part 2. There is of course plenty of trademark Rantanen bass rumble and also the synthetic discordance that has emerged in his sound in the last few years.

In general the slower tempos of Robot Construction are also kept in Mechanised Incantations although ‘Hologram Amber’, ‘Flying Above The Surface’ and ‘Reflection’ form a mini-suite that will all have dancefloor appeal. That said, even the slower tempos of tracks one to five hold a great sense of power and strength.

Aside from this album trilogy Rantanen’s last EP on City Wall, Nychthemeron in Madagascar EP gathered special momentum with DJ support from Developer, Samuli Kemppi, Pascal Feos, Darkmode, Mattias Fridell, Vince Watson, Patrick DSP, Speedy J and Angel Alanis to name a few.

Rantanen has been dealing with the theme of auditory mechanisational change in his works such as Rocket Bay EP (2003), Dark Water EP (2008), Gasoline Rainbow EP (2010), Grinding Ground suite (2011) and Roaring Dunes suite (2012). Rantanen has also dealt with the theme of societal change from the perspective of Cyberpunk.

Rantanen wants to show how boundaries between man and machine, the natural and the artificial have become blurred. He also wants to reveal how a change in our audible environment might soon be a reality. These Cyberpunk themes of societal and audible change are explored in his more chaotic works such as Access Denied EP (1999), Kaotic EP (2002), Memorising Every Phrase EP (2006), Robotan Elbows EP (2009), Anarchy EP (2011), Organisms (2012), Mutations (2012) and Corporations (2012).

The goal of this current Cyberpunk Trilogy is to further explore the blurring of the boundary between the natural and the artificial. Meanwhile Rantanen also has a 2013 EP duo on City Wall, consisting of Nychthemeron in Galapagos and Nychthemeron in Madagascar, which continue Rantanen’s expression of the changes that are happening in our audible environment in terms of “industrial presence”.
